Recipe: American Buttercream

American Buttercream has the prefect consistency to ice any cake! Use this recipe and your favorite cake colors to decorate your buttercream cake.


  • 1 1/2 cup  Hi-ratio shortening at room temputure (sub with crisco as well)
  • 1 cup        Unsalted butter at room temputure
  • 1/2 tsp      Almond extract
  • 1/2 tbsp    Vanilla
  • 4.5 tbs      Water 
  • 2.5 lbs      Sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp      Salt


  1. With a paddle attachment mix shortening, butter, almond and vanilla until smooth
  2. In a cup add water and dissolve salt
  3. To the shortening mixture, add the powdered sugar slowly, alternating with the salty water to help with mixing
  4. Continue to alternate and mix until well combined
