Recipe: American Buttercream

American Buttercream has the prefect consistency to ice any cake! Use this recipe and your favorite cake colors to decorate your buttercream cake.

Yields about 6.5 cups

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup  Hi-ratio shortening at room temperature (substitute with Crisco as well)
  • 1 cup        Unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1/4 tsp      Almond emulsion (or 1/2 tsp of almond extract)
  • 1/2 tbsp    Vanilla
  • 4.5 tbsp      Water 
  • 1/2 tsp      Salt
  • 2.5 lbs      Sifted powdered sugar - or about 9 cups (may use unsifted if sold in plastic bags

Steps:

  1. Use a mixer and a paddle attachment to mix shortening, butter, almond, and vanilla until smooth
  2. In a cup add water and dissolve salt
  3. Add powdered sugar to the shortening mixture slowly, alternating with the salty water to help with mixing
  4. Continue to alternate between sugar and water and mix until well combined
